Located in the Phoenix Park (one of Europe’s largest designed urban spaces) and standing at 62 metres (203 ft) tall, The Wellington Monument in Phoenix Park is the tallest obelisk in Europe. Built to commemorate the victories of the ‘Iron Duke’ Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, who was born in either county Meath or Dublin. Each face contains a bronze plaque cast from cannons captured at Waterloo. Originally planned to be located in Merrion Square, it was built in the Phoenix Park after opposition from the square's residents.
